Sleepy Heads

During the first two weeks of a baby’s life they spend on average 14 to 18 hours of a 24-hour period asleep. I know that it doesn’t feel like it when he or she wakes every 2-3 hours to feed! This is one of the reasons why it is best to have a newborn photoshoot when baby is 5 – 14 days old.

Personally, I don’t think that there is anything sweeter than capturing photos of a baby sleeping like a little angel. From a photographer’s perspective it makes it possible to get a wider variety of posed shots, but as any seasoned newborn photographer will tell you, sleep isn’t always on baby’s agenda.

Does this mean that it isn’t possible to finish a session with a varied gallery? Absolutely not! First of all, let me reassure any parent preparing for their newborn baby’s photoshoot that having a baby sleep through their entire newborn photoshoot is very rare indeed. In fact, most of my sessions involve baby waking for a feed and or a nappy change several times. As long as baby is content while he or she is awake, then I love to seize the opportunity to take photos of those big beautiful eyes!

If, however baby is awake and not a happy bunny I have a few tricks of the trade that 90% of the time help baby to drift off into a nice deep sleep. Even if your baby doesn’t sleep for a prolonged period of time for whatever reason, I am still able to deliver a gallery of beautiful images.

On very rare occasions when baby won’t settle at all, which is usually down to a persistent tummy ache or other illness, I always reschedule the session at no additional cost. So please be reassured that if this were to happen during your little one’s session that all is not lost!
