Safety First

As a professional newborn photographer, I understand that capturing precious moments of your newborn is a special and exciting experience. However, the safety of your little one is always my top priority during a photoshoot. Newborns are delicate and require special care, and I want to assure you that I take all necessary precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable photoshoot for your baby. In this blog, I would like to share some important safety tips to help you understand the measures I take to ensure your baby's safety during a newborn photoshoot.

Experience and Training: When choosing a newborn photographer, it's important to look for someone with experience and training in handling newborns safely. I am CRB checked, paediatric first aid trained and have undergone specialised training in newborn photoshoot safety. I have years of experience in handling very young babies and am knowledgeable about safe handling techniques, posing, and props that are appropriate for newborns.

Studio Safety: My studio is designed to create a safe environment for your baby. I keep it clean, well-maintained, and free from any hazards. The studio is heated to a warm and comfortable temperature of around 20 degrees Celsius to keep your baby cosy. I do however adjust the temperature depending on how many layers baby is wearing or wrapped up in. I constantly check your baby’s temperature throughout the photoshoot to make sure that they aren’t too hot or cold. I also use soft, even lighting that is gentle on your baby's eyes, and I avoid using harsh flash that could startle your baby.

Communication and Consent: Before the photoshoot, I will communicate with you about your preferences, concerns, and any specific poses or props you may have in mind. Your input is invaluable in ensuring that your baby's safety and comfort are prioritized. I will explain each pose and prop that we will use and seek your consent before proceeding. Your comfort and peace of mind are important to me. I will not however accept requests attempt to recreate several popular newborn poses such as the ‘froggy’ pose. This is purely down to the fact that they potentially put an unnecessary strain on baby’s back and hips. Even though newborns are routinely checked for a condition called hip dysplasia, it is not always evident at birth and can be diagnosed during baby’s six-week check-up. It is much safer to follow baby’s lead and you can still achieve many curled up poses that do not put any strain whatsoever on baby.

Baby's Comfort: I understand that your baby's comfort is crucial during the photoshoot. I take breaks as needed for feeding, burping, and soothing your baby. I am attentive to your baby's cues and will stop the photoshoot immediately if your baby shows any signs of discomfort, distress, or hunger. I always prioritise your baby's comfort and well-being.

Hygiene: I maintain strict hygiene standards during the photoshoot. I wash my hands thoroughly with soap and water or use hand sanitizer frequently to minimize the risk of transferring germs or infections to your baby. I also ensure that all props and equipment used during the photoshoot are clean and sanitized.

Safe Props and Poses: I only use safe props and poses that are appropriate for newborns. I avoid using props that are sharp, fragile, or have small parts that could pose a risk to your baby. I always make sure that your baby's head and neck are supported at all times during poses, and I never force your baby into any uncomfortable or unnatural positions.

Parental Involvement: I encourage parents to be actively involved during the photoshoot. You are welcome to be present, observe how I handle your baby, and ask questions or voice any concerns you may have. Your input and participation are valuable in ensuring that we create a safe and enjoyable experience for your baby.

Emergency Preparedness: Despite taking all necessary precautions, emergencies can happen. I am prepared and have a plan in place. I am trained in infant CPR and paediatric First Aid, and I have knowledge of the location of the nearest emergency medical services.
